Running Gait Analysis

During your running gait analysis appointment, Dr. Coapland will look to identify to origin of the symptoms you experience with running. Through our comprehensive assessment we look to find the root cause of your symptoms and provide you with guidance and modifications to reduce pain and improve performance.

Often times the area where we experience pain while running may not be the origin of those symptoms, there can be underlying hip instability that results in knee pain or a lack of stability that presents with ankle pain. We look at the whole picture of your running form and provide a customized plan to get you back on track and running your best.

Soft Tissue and Joint Biomechanics Assessment

Dr. Coapland will assess the soft tissue - muscles, ligaments, and tendons - and joint mechanics of your hips, knees, and ankles looking for tissue that is tight, restricted, or painful. They will also assess the range of motion of those joints in addition to performing any necessary orthopedic testing to identify any underlying injuries that may warrant further assessment with imaging.

Stability and Movement Pattern Assessment

Dr. Coapland will assess the flexibility and stability of your hip, knee, and ankle joints during movement to identify possible faulty movement patterns or underlying instability that may be contributing to symptoms.

Treadmill Assessment

On our in house treadmill, Dr. Coapland will assess your natural cadence, foot strike (rear foot, midfoot, or forefoot), arm drive, and hip drop while running. Based on that assessment they will identify irregular biomechanics and inefficient movement patterns, will then give you modifications to implement in realtime while running to reduce pain and improve performance.

Shoe Fit

Dr. Coapland will assess the fit of your running shoes as well as assessing the wear patterns on the treads and insoles of your shoes for information about foot strike and weight bearing during your stride. He will also provide guidance on balancing stability, weight, and toe box allowance of your shoes.

Guidance and Advice

Based on the results of your comprehensive assessment, Dr. Coapland will provide you with modifications to your running stride and program as well as strength training exercises to reduce injury and improve performance.
